In order to get to Antarctica, you need to get "the right" clothing. So the US Antarctic Program does provide people with such pieces of equipment.
We got to the Clothing Distribution Center (CDC) at 8am to be briefed and get some gear. 2 bags filled with antique gear were waiting for us! When flying South, it is required you wear the gear! If you have your own gear, you also need to have it certified in order to use it.
I can definitely understand such precautions. The Antarctic continent surely can be tough. Still. What a contrast with the operations North... In Greenland, they would let you go with shorts and a pair of flip flops for baggage!
After a few hours spent at the CDC, it was time to enjoy Christchurch and some lamb!
This highly fashionable outfit surely does scare the penguins at McMurdo.
Pour se rendre en Antarctique, un équipement approprié est nécessaire. USAP (United States Antarctic Programs), dans sa générosité, fournit à chaque participant les vêtements dont il aura besoin au cours des semaines passées sur le continent. Rendez-vous donc à 8h du matin au Clothing Distribution Center (CDC) où un briefing nous attend. 2 sacs pleins de vêtements datant de Mathusalem nous y attendent également. Cet équipement doit inpérativement être porté dans le vol qui nous emportera vers le Sud! Si je peux comprendre les précautions prises par l'organisation, je suis un peu surpris du contraste d'avec l'Arctique...! Au Groenland, on peut partir avec pour seul bagage, un short et une paire de tongues...!
Aprés quelques heures passées au CDC, il est temps de se dégourdir les jambes dans la ville de Christchurch et de déguster de l'agneau néo-zélandais!
