What would McMurdo
Station (and Scott Base) without the USCGC Polar Star icebreaker? An ice
breaker comes every season to make a channel through the sea ice, to allow the
tanker and the vessel to reach the station. This season, the Polar Star did not
have much work to do... Due to the high temperatures and the wind, the sea ice
easily broke off and drifted north, clearing the Sound.
Once the way to the
station is free of ice, the tanker and the cargo ship show up and unload... The
tanker spent 3 days unloading the fuel for the winter and the next season. The
vessel is still in town and already has unloaded its 700 containers, with food,
building materials and so many other things.
Sometimes cruise
ships also show up in the Sound...
Que deviendrait la station de McMurdo (et la base
Antarctique Scott) sans le brise glace Polar Star? Chaque saison, un brise
glace vient ouvrir un passage dans la banquise afin que les navires
ravitailleurs (fuel et cargo) puissent atteindre le port de McMurdo. Cette saison,
le Polar Star, qui reprend juste le service après plusieurs années de repos, a
eu la tâche facile… En raison des temperatures anormalement élevées et du vent,
la banquise s’est vite brisée, libérant le passage.
Une fois le chemin vers le port de McMurdo libre, les
vaisseaux de ravitaillement arrivent l’un après l’autre et la station s’anime.
Le tanker a passé 3 jours pour vider ses cuves de carburants. Le porte
containeurs est toujours au port et a déjà déchargé ses 700 containeurs.
Carburants, vivres, et divers matériaux de construction sont maintenant
entreposés pour l’hiver et la saison prochaine.
Parfois des navires de croisière s’aventure dans la passage
entre l’Ile de Ross et le continent…
